Sheet Metal Fabrication Helper

Fabricator helpers assist Sheet Metal Fabricators fabricate, assemble, install, and repair sheet metal products and equipment such as ductwork, plenums, fire dampers, and diffusers.  

This is an entry level position.

  • Location: Richmond, VA
  • Environment: Fabrication Shop
  • Hours: 6:00 AM - 2:30 PM, M-F.

What we’re looking for

  • 0-2 years of sheet metal industry experience
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including unscheduled overtime (nights and weekends)
  • Must have a reliable source of transportation to and from work
  • Knowledge of basic construction/shop math (addition, subtraction, division, fraction, and multiplication).
  • Work easily and skillfully with hands.
  • Maintain a positive attitude and willing to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and deal diplomatically with coworkers other tradesmen.
  • Ability to work with direct supervisor.
  • Drug testing and current US work authorization required

What you’ll do

  • Follow specific directions from supervisor and mechanics.
  • Perform a variety of duties which may often change.
  • Repeat tasks of short duration according to a set procedure.
  • Operate sheet metal fabrication equipment.
  • Select gauge and type of sheet metal according to product being fabricated and knowledge of metal.
  • Locate and mark dimensions and reference lines on metal sheets.
  • Shape metal over anvils, blocks, or forms, using hammer.
  • Set up and operate soldering and welding equipment to join together sheet metal parts.
  • Smooth seams, joints, or burred surfaces, using files and portable grinder or buffer.
  • Install assemblies according to blueprint specifications using tools.
  • Inspects assemblies and installation for conformance with specifications.
  • Erect air handling equipment.
  • Operate shop forklift to lift or transport equipment, material, and supplies as necessary.
  • Help set up tools and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads materials from trucks and into buildings.
  • Furnishes experienced craft worker with materials, tools, equipment, and supplies.
  • Cleans work area and restocks supplies and materials as necessary.
  • May perform minor maintenance or cleaning of mechanic’s tools and equipment.
  • Performs other routine duties as directed by experienced craft person.
  • Maintains good housekeeping and a safe work area.
  • Works safely, encourages others to do so, and complies with applicable health and safety-related rules, regulations, and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as directed by supervisor.

Physical Requirements

  • See well (either naturally or with correction).
  • Ability to wear personal protection equipment such as hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, fall protection, safety shoes, high visibility vest and others as required.
