Position Title:  Equipment Operator

Reports To:  Construction Manager

Job Summary:  Operates specialized light construction equipment in a safe and efficient manner. The work requires considerable skill in manipulating equipment and constant attention to safety of operation in order to prevent accidents.

Requirements:

  1. Experience operating specialized light construction equipment on commercial construction jobsites
  2. Knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in equipment operation.
  3. Hazards and applicable safety rules and precautions for heavy equipment operation.
  4. The operation of assigned equipment per manufacturer’s recommendations.
  5. Understand and comply with simple written and oral instructions given in the English language.
  6. Work cooperatively with other employees and the public.
  7. Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.
  8. Maintain a positive attitude and willing to work in a team environment.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively and deal diplomatically with coworkers other tradesmen.
  10. Ability to work with direct supervisor.

 

Primary Responsibilities/Duties:

  1. Fully understand OSHA trenching/excavation standards
  2. Safely and skillfully operates a backhoe, front-end loader ranging from 3/4 cubic yards to 4 cubic yards or other related construction equipment.
  3. Maintains equipment in proper operating condition by performing simple preventive maintenance tasks such as making simple adjustments and lubricating equipment.
  4. Works with a maintenance crew or as a laborer when not operating equipment
  5. Trains others on the proper operation of a backhoe.
  6. Assesses visually digging areas prior to digging.
  7. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times, streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality seamless customer service.
  8. Detect necessary equipment repairs by (visually and/or aurally) perceiving malfunctions.
  9. Communicate orally with customers, clients or the public in face-to-face one-on-one settings.
  10. Comprehend and make inferences from written materials such as equipment operations manuals.
  11. Make fine, highly controlled muscular movements to adjust the position of a control mechanism.
  12. Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.

 

Physical Requirements:

  1. See well (either naturally or with correction).
  2. Ability to wear personal protection equipment such as hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, fall protection, safety shoes, high visibility vest and others as required.
  3. Physically capable of working with hands and legs as outlined below. All employees are expected to use good judgment while performing physical job requirements and aware of their own personal physical limitations. Heavy lifting may require the use of material lifting equipment, personnel assistance, or additional help as necessary.
