Safety Coordinator

Comfort Systems USA-ColonialWebb is looking for an experienced Safety Professional to service as our Safety Coordinator for our Service Division. 

This position provides technical expertise, training, and incident investigation review, coordination of post-accident drug and alcohol testing, and site risk assessments/inspection/audits.  He/she will work closely with employees who have “lost time” injuries to support their return to work and ensure compliance with state and federal OSHA regulations and facilitates a culture of safety care.

What you’ll do

  • Assist Operations Mangers in the development of plans, systems and training that develop local, competent, and caring safety personnel and resources.
  • Conduct site visits/inspections of facilities, work areas and equipment; observing employee work practices and improving safety preparedness to ensure employees are equipped with the training, tools, and equipment necessary to work safely.
  • Identify corrective actions necessary to bring job sites into compliance with applicable codes, laws, regulations, and standards, and explain these measures to others. 
  • Review post incident investigations for injuries, illnesses and vehicle incidents.
  • Ensure compliance with state and federal regulations.
  • Maintain and review documents submitted from the field, for example, pre-task panning forms jobsite safety inspections and various permits.
  • Provide assistance with work activities that require permits.
  • Accompany employees to medical facilities for follow-up appointments and drug/alcohol screenings.  Facilitate random drug tests when required.
  • Assist in development of safety communications and weekly tool box talks.
  • Conduct safety training for Service division.  Support other divisions as required.
  • Coordinate tasks and functions to ensure work is performed safely in accordance with company safety policies and procedures and OSHA standards. 
  • Inspect the availability, readiness and proper use of required accident prevention procedures, safety and fire prevention equipment, protective clothing and devices, and first aid supplies. Recommends and follows up to verify the implementation of corrective actions. 
  • Identify and recommend safety equipment, material and supplies for work operations. 
  • Attends and participates in safety committee meetings with sites and customers. 
  • Develop, assist, or conduct appropriate Job Hazard Analysis and Activity Hazard Analysis.
  • Communicates with physicians, health care institutions and insurance carriers to maximize company case management initiatives.
  • Assist in reporting workers compensation claims. Act as a liaison with workers’ compensation issues. 
  • Serves as a safety resource for OSHA compliance, company safety policies and procedures, and support the prevention of incidents and accidents.

 

What we’re looking for

  • Minimum of three years of safety experience in the construction or facilities service industry.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum OSHA 30 
  • Possess a CSST, CHST, or CSP certification. 
  • Certified in the safe operation of relevant construction equipment.
  • English writing skills—inclusive of proper grammar, usage and spelling (Spanish a plus)
  • Knowledge of current corporate policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of current Virginia and Federal Occupational Safety and Health regulations. 
  • Knowledge of current NFPA Standards applicable to work operations. 
  • Knowledge of current US Army Corps of Engineers Safety program (EM.385-1-1)
  • Ability to clearly communicate (verbal and written) information in English (and Spanish a plus) so others will understand.  Must be articulate and honest in communications. 
  • Intuition and foresight to identify when something is wrong or is likely to go wrong (not necessarily solving the problem, but able to recognize a problem exists or could exist) and work with others to resolve the situation. 
  • Insight to gather and make sense of information, including the ability to identify relationships between unrelated data and combining information to form rules or conclusions.
  • Arrange items or actions in a certain order or pattern according to a specific rule or set of rules (e.g., patterns of numbers, letters, words, pictures, mathematical operations). 
  • Presentation skills with the ability to deliver and provide educational training sessions. 
  • Ability to operate audio/visual equipment during training sessions. 
  • Work independently, under general supervision; utilize judgment and make decisions. 
  • Ability to coordinate and perform multiple activities in a timely manner. 
  • Ability to maintain a sense of urgency, but remain calm, when handling emergencies. 
  • Operate company vehicle and equipment within guidelines and with care.
